Treatment
The association between Yaz and blood clots continues to generate controversy as women suffer from drospirenone birth control pill clot side effects including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and strokes. Clots can form anywhere there is a vein and aren’t limited to the legs or lungs. Patients have reported developing blood clots in almost every area of the body while using Yaz birth control. After being diagnosed with a blood clot, women are then faced with different treatment options depending on the type of clot and its severity.
Treatment options include:
1. Blood Thinners - Medications referred to as anticoagulants are used to treat blood clots. These drugs decrease your blood’s ability to clot. While they do not break up existing blood clots, they can stop existing clots from getting bigger or reduce your risk of developing additional clots. Common anticoagulants include heparin and warfarin (Coumadin). Heparin is given through a vein (intravenously, or IV) or as an injection. Warfarin is given as a pill. Treatment usually involves taking blood thinners for at least 3 months to prevent existing clots from growing. Some women are forced to be on blood thinners indefinitely due to the severity of their Yaz blood clots.
The use of heparin and warfarin must be closely monitored because both can have side effects, such as an increased risk of bleeding. On the other hand, if your dose is too low, you are at increased risk of additional blood clots. People taking blood thinners must have regular blood tests to check how long it takes the blood to clot. For many women this involves taking additional time off from work to make their appointments.
2. Filters - If you are at a high risk for pulmonary embolism and you cannot take medicines to thin your blood, a vena cava filter may be used. The filter is inserted into the vena cava, the large vein that returns blood to the heart from the abdomen and legs. This filter prevents clots from breaking loose and lodging in your lungs.
3. Compression Stockings - These elastic stockings are worn on the leg from your foot to about the level of your knee. They are worn if you have developed a deep vein thrombosis or other clot in your leg. This pressure helps reduce the chances that your blood will pool and clot. These stocking are tight at the ankle and become looser as the go up creating gentle pressure up the leg. Your doctor also may recommend that you prop up or elevate your leg when possible, use a heating pad, and take walks. These measures may help reduce the pain and swelling that commonly occurs with DVT.
